India and Panama played to a 1-1 draw at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru on Friday in an international friendly. Ryan Williams put India ahead before Omar Valencia levelled for Panama.

India looked on course for a surprise win after Williams gave the home side a 1-0 lead in the 41st minute, and the hosts carried the momentum into the break. Panama, despite their World Cup pedigree, appeared unsettled as India maintained the upper hand for large spells of the first half. The match was played in front of a loud home crowd stirred by India’s early control.

The deadlock was broken when a defensive lapse allowed Williams to run through with only the goalkeeper to beat; his cool finish ignited cheers from the stands. India continued to push after taking the lead and created the better openings in the opening 45 minutes. The forward’s goal gave India a lead they defended with urgency until the second half.

Against the run of play, Panama substitute Omar Valencia produced a powerful left-footed strike from well outside the box in the 68th minute that left custodian Gurpreet Singh Sandhu stranded. Valencia’s long-range effort brought the visitors level and prevented what the report described as an embarrassing defeat for Panama. The equaliser shifted the momentum back in Panama’s favour temporarily.

Panama did not field what was described as their strongest eleven, with only two starters — Cesar Blackman and Tomas Rodriguez — having featured at the World Cup earlier this year. The matchup highlighted the contrast in rankings: Panama are listed 44th in the world while India are 138th. Those numbers framed the context for India’s spirited display against a higher-ranked opponent.

India continued to attack without fear after the leveller but were unable to add a second goal. Edmund Lalrindika came closest to a late winner but missed from close range in the dying minutes, and Manvir Singh fluffed a backheel that might have opened another chance. The home faithful remained engaged throughout thanks to the consistently aggressive approach from the Indians.
