India held to 0-0 by England to finish second in Pool D at Women's Hockey World Cup 2026

India and England played out a 0-0 draw in Pool D of the Women's Hockey World Cup 2026 on Thursday, August 20, with India securing the result required to progress to the tournament's second round.
India needed only a draw to advance and finished second in Pool D with five points, while China topped the group with seven points; India will carry over a point from their draw with China into the next phase and will face Australia and the Netherlands in the second round. Coach Sjoerd Marijne had earlier said he wanted his players to be more efficient in passing after India's 6-1 win over South Africa.
India's defence and goalkeeping produced the decisive contributions as Savita Punia and Bichu Devi made several important saves, with the report noting Bichu produced sensational stops in the final quarter. England dominated possession and statistical measures but converted none of their penalty corners; they had 11 penalty corners and failed to score from any of them.
The match featured a series of early Indian chances: Ishika ran down the left and was denied by England keeper Miriam Pritchard in the fourth minute, Sunelita Toppo earned the first penalty corner, and Navneet's effort that crossed the line was ruled out for an infringement. India also had a seventh-minute penalty corner that went wide and a Deepika attempt in the eighth minute that was narrowly wide.
England's first penalty corner came after a misplaced Indian pass in the 11th minute and a subsequent turnover created a threat from Lily Owsley. Passing frailties in and around the England D persisted into the second quarter; Ishika and Salima Tete combined in the 21st minute for a move that lacked the final touch, and Lalremsiami's penalty corner was saved by Pritchard.
The third quarter began with India pressing and earning an early penalty corner, but a subsequent goal was disallowed. England then seized momentum, forcing Savita into a key save in the 39th minute, and a deliberate back clearance by Sunelita Toppo conceded another penalty corner as England intensified pressure.
India defended deep in the final 15 minutes as England continued to press and accumulate penalty corners; a 51st-minute block prompted visible celebration from Bichu and the crowd. England removed keeper Miriam Pritchard for an extra attacker late on and nearly scored through Tessa Howard, but Bichu, described in the report as an accidental goalkeeper by her own admission, dived to her left to make the stop and preserve the clean sheet as Marijne reacted in the dugout.
Salima praised the team's defensive effort after the match, saying: "In the start, we decided that we'll fight for everything. Today, we defended really well as a team. England are a very good team. But we did not stop fighting till the last minute. England have a really good PC attack, but we were really good in defence, so I want to compliment the defence," a buoyant Salima said after the game. She added: "We are ready to fight with everything against the Netherlands and Australia. This match is finished, now we need to fight," said Salima. Marijne's pre-tournament remark also remains on record: "We're the best of the rest, it's now time to make the top 8," Marijne said before the tournament.
