India hold England to 0-0 draw at Wagener Stadion, advance to Hockey World Cup second round

India held England to a 0-0 draw at the Wagener Stadion in Amstelveen on Thursday, August 20, 2026, and advanced to the Hockey World Cup second round. The goalless result proved nervy for India but was sufficient for progression.
In Pool D, India finished second with five points under coach Sjoerd Marijne, behind China who ended the pool on seven points; India had been ranked the third-best side in the group. The match at Wagener Stadion concluded India’s pool-stage fixtures and secured their place in the tournament’s next phase.
The tie was decided in the final minute when Tessa Howard struck at goal and Bichu Devi sprang to her left to push the ball away, a clearance later described by Savita Punia as the "save of the match". That intervention preserved the stalemate and ensured India’s qualification.
Savita Punia also made key interventions earlier, producing two saves in the third quarter to deny England. England intensified pressure in the last 15 minutes, including removing their goalkeeper for an extra outfield player to seek a decisive strike.
Statistically, England generated significantly more attacking entries after halftime, registering 16 circle penetrations to India’s two as India retreated into their own quarter. Despite that dominance, India’s defence held firm when it mattered most.
England’s Darcy Bourne and Anna Toman combined for eight attempts from penalty corners in the second period, but India’s penalty-corner defence was marshalled by skipper Salima Tete, who repeatedly rushed out to disrupt their routines. India had earlier squandered opportunities from short corners, with Navneet Kaur and Deepika failing to convert.
Navneet fired wide on her second short-corner attempt and became predictable with a drag-wide-and-strike approach that Miriam Pritchard anticipated. Marijne’s side now face the Netherlands in their second-round fixture on Friday, where they will need an improved performance.
