The report in the Times of India quotes head coach Khalid Jamil as favouring the stronger opposition in New Zealand and urging the All India Football Federation (AIFF) to send the best available team. Khalid Jamil said, “When the friendlies against teams that played at the FIFA World Cup were offered, I agreed with the federation’s decision. For the next window in November, there are two options.” He added, “I have told AIFF that we must send our best team to New Zealand. I can’t afford to be selfish. We have to do what is good for Indian football.”

New Zealand enter the scheduled friendlies off participation at the 2026 FIFA World Cup; the report describes them as three-time World Cuppers who scored against every opponent in their World Cup group, including Belgium, and drew with Iran and Egypt.
