One qualification route requires India to beat Argentina by three goals, which would move India’s goal difference to -1 and leave Argentina at -3 with both teams on three points; under that scenario England would have to lose to the Netherlands by at least two goals, which would put England on a -2 goal difference and allow India to finish ahead on goal difference.

If India win by four goals, any England defeat to the Netherlands would be sufficient for India to advance, but a draw for England would take them to four points and remove India from contention; additionally, a two-goal victory for India would demand an England loss by at least three goals to open the path to the semi-finals.

Harmanpreet Singh has scored six goals and shares the tournament lead with Argentina’s Tomas Domene, yet India have struggled to find field goals consistently; Abhishek has two goals and Dilpreet Singh one, the only Indian forwards to score across the team’s four matches so far, increasing reliance on penalty-corner conversions.

India’s chief coach Craig Fulton said: "We have a lifeline to stay in the fight to reach the semi-finals. It is quite clear what we have to do," and added: "We need the goals, but at the same time we still need to manage our own game and maintain our structure." Against Argentina the team will focus on sharper movement in the final third, greater efficiency in front of goal and a more ruthless approach to chances.

The decisive Pool E fixture between India and Argentina is scheduled for August 24 at the Wagener Hockey Stadium in Amstelveen and will begin at 6:15 pm IST; England face the Netherlands in the other Pool E match on the same day, outcomes of which will determine India’s fate.
