India must beat Australia in Pool E to reach FIH Women's Hockey World Cup 2026 semi-finals

India face Australia at the Wagener Hockey Stadium in Amstelveen on August 23 in the final Pool E match of the FIH Women's Hockey World Cup 2026; a victory will take India into the semi-finals for the first time since 1974. The game is scheduled to begin at 10:30 pm IST.
Results from the preliminary phase have been carried into the second round: China’s result from Group D was carried forward, and Australia’s 2-4 loss to the Netherlands is also counted. In Pool E so far Australia drew 1-1 with China, while India entered the second round after a 2-2 draw with China, a 6-1 win over South Africa and a goalless draw with England that sealed progression from Pool D.
As things stand India sit bottom of Pool E following their loss to the Netherlands and must defeat Australia to keep semi-final hopes alive, the report said. Australia are in a similar position but, unlike India, a draw could suffice for the Hockeyroos if China lose by three or more goals against the Netherlands. India’s chief coach Sjoerd Marijne framed the fixture succinctly: "We see it as a quarterfinal," he said. "It’s always very close (against Australia), and that’s how I think the match on Sunday will be. There will not be many secrets because we play many times against each other. It’s a must-win game for both sides and that’s something which makes it a big challenge for us."
India’s defensive unit has been a tournament strength, the article notes, with goalkeeper Savita and Bichu Devi cited as providing an assured presence between the posts. Against the Netherlands India conceded an early goal but the defence "remained composed and disciplined, frustrating the hosts for long periods and ensuring they did not concede a field goal," according to the report. That resilience will be central again given the fine margins in Pool E.
Offensively, India have created chances from open play and penalty corners but need improved efficiency inside the circle to convert those opportunities. Marijne warned of that exact shortcoming: "Against big teams, if you get three opportunities, you have to convert one or two. That’s something we keep working on," he added. "It’s the same with penalty corners. At the moment we are not scoring off a lot of penalty corners…and we know that. But we have the quality, and I have confidence in Navneet (Kaur) and Deepika. They both have shown that they can do it, and hopefully they can do it against Australia."
The two nations recently met in a four-match series before the FIH Nations Cup, with that series finishing 2-2 and providing recent competitive context between the sides. Historically in World Cups India and Australia have met twice, with Australia winning both encounters: 3-2 in 1983 and 6-3 in 2006.
India must defeat Australia and hope the Netherlands fail to beat China in the other Pool E fixture; a win would take India to four points and into second place in the group, securing progression to the semi-final stage. The outcome of the match at Wagener Hockey Stadium on August 23 will determine whether India reach the last four.
