India No. 1 Sumit Nagal apologised to the Maia crowd and Portuguese player Henrique Rocha after making a "talking gesture" following his hard-fought first-round win at the Maia ATP Challenger.
He called the action a heat-of-the-moment reaction and said he had apologised to Rocha in person.
The incident came after India's disappointing Asian Games tennis campaign ended without a medal for the first time since 1986.
