India's best finishes at the FIH Hockey World Cup: 1975 men's title, 1974 women's fourth

India's men's hockey team won the FIH Men's Hockey World Cup in 1975 in Kuala Lumpur, beating Pakistan 2-1 to record the country's best-ever finish at the tournament. The Indian women's side recorded its best World Cup result with a fourth-place finish at the inaugural 1974 Women's World Cup in Mandelieu, France.
India have a long history at the FIH Hockey World Cup, with the men's team claiming multiple podium finishes including one title and the women's team reaching the semi-finals in the first edition. The men’s peak came in the early 1970s across consecutive tournaments, while the women’s top result remains from 1974. With the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 underway, both teams enter the competition aiming to improve on those past performances.
The Indian men's team secured its sole World Cup title in 1975, defeating Pakistan 2-1 in the final in Kuala Lumpur. Ashok Kumar scored the decisive goal in that match, and India had advanced to the final by beating Malaysia in the semi-finals. That victory remains the country’s only Hockey World Cup triumph.
India had earlier reached the podium in the first two editions of the Men's Hockey World Cup, finishing third in 1971 and runners-up in 1973. The 1971 tournament was held in Barcelona, where India beat Kenya in the third-place match to claim bronze. Two years later, India reached the 1973 final in Amstelveen but were defeated by hosts Netherlands and finished second.
The men's side have not returned to a World Cup final since 1975; their nearest recent showing came in 2023 when India hosted the tournament. In that edition India defeated Belgium in the quarter-finals before losing to eventual champions Germany in the semi-finals. They then lost the bronze-medal match to the Netherlands and finished fourth.
The Indian women's team's best World Cup performance occurred at the inaugural 1974 event in Mandelieu, France, where they reached the semi-finals. India missed out on a place in the final and subsequently lost the bronze-medal match to West Germany, finishing fourth. The women have not matched that semi-final appearance in later editions of the tournament.
With the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 underway, the 1975 men's title stands as India’s benchmark in the men’s competition and the 1974 fourth place remains the women's best finish; both teams are competing in the current tournament with the objective of improving on those results.
