India's Davis Cup history: 1921 debut and three final defeats

India's national tennis team has competed in the Davis Cup since making its debut in 1921, and has reached the final on three occasions but never won the title.

The Davis Cup is governed by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and features teams from over 150 nations, making it the largest annual international team competition in sport. Over the years India’s squads have included Anand Amritraj, Yuki Bhambri, Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes. India’s three final appearances are the most by any Asian side.

India reached the Davis Cup final in 1966, 1974 and 1987. Alongside Romania, India are one of only two nations to have reached multiple finals without ever lifting the trophy. The 1974 campaign is widely regarded within the Indian record as the closest the country came to winning the title.

In 1974 India defeated defending champions Australia 3-2 in the Davis Cup Eastern Zone final in Kolkata. The Indian pairing of Vijay and Anand Amritraj beat Australia’s John Alexander and Colin Dibley in a marathon tie that produced 327 games — the highest total in the tournament’s history. India ultimately withdrew from the final and refused to travel to South Africa in protest against the country’s apartheid regime; as a result South Africa were named champions.

Leander Paes holds India’s all-time Davis Cup appearance and victory records, having played in 58 ties and represented India across 30 editions. He has 93 wins for India, comprised of 48 singles victories and 45 in doubles.

India last reached the knockout stage in 2011, finishing as one of the top 16 teams in the World Group before losing 3-1 to Serbia. That 2011 World Group tie remains the most recent occasion India advanced to the tournament’s knockout rounds.

India is participating in the 2026 Davis Cup qualifiers against South Korea in Seoul on September 18-19. Italy are the current Davis Cup champions, having won their third consecutive title in 2025.
