India’s first-match results against every international opponent

India lost to England by 158 runs at Lord’s in their first international match in 1932, the fixture that began the country's more than nine-decade history in global cricket.

What started with that Test at Lord’s in 1932 has expanded into a long list of opponents across different formats; India have faced traditional rivals such as Australia, England, Pakistan and New Zealand while also meeting teams that joined international cricket later.

India’s inaugural international fixture was the 1932 Test against England at Lord’s, which finished as a 158-run defeat for India.

Australia were the next nation India faced at international level, meeting them for the first time in 1947 in Brisbane; that match ended in an innings and 226-run defeat for India.

India’s first encounter with the West Indies in 1948 concluded as a draw, while the sides’ first meeting with Pakistan came in 1952 and produced India’s first win against the arch-rival.

In more recent years India have played first matches against newer international sides including Afghanistan, Nepal, USA and Oman, with those initial games producing a range of outcomes.

The list of opponents has continued to expand alongside the growth of international cricket; Japan is set to become the latest addition in 2026.
