India were beaten 3-1 by co-hosts the Netherlands in their opening Pool E match of Stage 2 at the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup 2026 on August 23, 2026, leaving their bid for a semi-final place in a precarious position. The result moved the Netherlands to six points at the top of the pool while India face a must-win match next against Argentina on August 24.

The Netherlands carried three points forward from the first stage and added three more from this victory to reach six, while Argentina and England sit level on three points apiece, with Argentina behind England on goals scored (4 to 5). India’s next fixture with Argentina is scheduled for August 24 (Monday).

The match was scoreless through more than two quarters as both teams traded possession and early chances. India pressed from the start and came closest in the opening period when Dilpreet Singh hesitated on a chance in the 10th minute and later Floris Wortelboer produced the match’s first shot on target. The Dutch earned an early penalty corner in the 13th minute that Sumit blocked before Sanjay cleared, and the first quarter finished 0-0.

The Netherlands increased their control in the second quarter and tested India with sustained pressure, earning another penalty corner in the 16th minute that Manpreet Singh helped deny. Dilpreet had India’s best opportunity of the half in the 23rd minute but rushed his finish, and India finally won their first penalty corner after a referral in the 35th minute, which Harmanpreet Singh sent wide.

The deadlock was broken in the 41st minute when Duco Telgenkamp capitalised on a defensive miscommunication to put the Netherlands ahead. India earned a penalty corner immediately after but were again thwarted by the Dutch rushers, and the third quarter ended 1-0 in favour of the hosts.

The Netherlands extended their lead in the 51st minute when Koen Bijen’s cross found Tjep Hoedemakers, whose deflection beat Mohith HS to make it 2-0. India responded swiftly: after a sequence of penalty-corner attempts, Harmanpreet converted from a corner in the 52nd minute to make it 2-1. The visitors’ reply was undone four minutes later when Thijs van Dam finished a counter-attack following a midfield turnover by Manpreet, restoring a 3-1 advantage for the Netherlands.

The match ended 3-1 with Duco Telgenkamp (41′), Tjep Hoedemakers (51′) and Thijs van Dam (55′) on the scoresheet for the Netherlands and Harmanpreet Singh (52′) scoring India’s goal. The victory consolidated the Netherlands at the top of Pool E with six points and left India bottom of the group.

India can still qualify for the semi-finals but must defeat Argentina by a large margin—specifically by five goals without conceding—and hope England lose to the Netherlands in their final Pool E match. India’s game against Argentina is scheduled to start at 6:15 IST on August 24, and the outcome of the remaining Pool E fixtures will determine whether they remain in contention.
