India's single-day Asian Games record: 15 medals on October 1, 2023
India recorded its biggest single-day medal haul at the Asian Games on October 1, 2023, in Hangzhou, winning 15 medals in one day during the 2022 Asian Games held in 2023. The tally that day comprised three gold, seven silver and five bronze medals.
India will compete at the Asian Games 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, which runs from September 19 to October 4, with 45 countries and regions contesting 43 sports. The Indian contingent for 2026 includes five Olympic medal winners — PV Sindhu, Manu Bhaker, Lovlina Borgohain, Aman Sehrawat and Mirabai Chanu — and arrives with the memory of a 107-medal haul from Hangzhou in 2023.
The 15 medals won on October 1, 2023 pushed India’s overall Hangzhou tally to 53 at that stage. The day’s medals were divided into three gold, seven silver and five bronze, forming the nation’s single-day high-water mark at the Asian Games.
Golf and shooting supplied notable results that day: Aditi Ashok became the first Indian woman to win an Asian Games medal in golf, finishing with silver after entering the final round with a seven-shot lead. In shooting, Manisha Keer, Rajeshwari Kumari and Preeti Rajak won silver in the women’s trap team event, while Kynan Chenai, Zoravar Singh Sandhu and Prithviraj Tondaiman captured gold in the men’s trap team competition.
Kynan Chenai added an individual bronze in trap on the same day, a contribution that helped India reach 22 shooting medals at the Games. Athletics produced nine medals on October 1, including Avinash Sable’s gold in the men’s 3000m steeplechase, where he became the first Indian man to win that event, and Tajinderpal Singh Toor’s successful defence of his Asian Games shot put title.
Several track finals yielded silver medals: Murali Sreeshankar in the long jump, Ajay Kumar Saroj in the men’s 1500m and Harmilan Bains in the women’s 1500m. Jyothi Yarraji’s result in the women’s 100m hurdles was upgraded from bronze to silver after the original gold medallist was disqualified for a false start.
Additional podium finishes on the day included Nikhat Zareen’s bronze in boxing following a semi-final defeat, Agasara Nandhini’s bronze in the heptathlon, Jinson Johnson’s bronze in the 1500m and Seema Punia’s bronze in the discus at age 40, while the men’s badminton team secured a silver — their best-ever finish in the team event at the Asian Games.
Nothing has matched that 15-medal single-day performance since Hangzhou, and it remains India’s best one-day showing at the Asian Games as the country prepares to contest the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Games from September 19 to October 4.
