India's six-gold surge lifts Asian Games medal haul to 76 as final weekend nears

India won six gold medals on October 2, 2026 at the Asian Games in Japan, raising its overall medal total to 76. The Indian women's hockey team beat China in the final to claim the gold.

India's women's hockey gold was the country's first in the event in 44 years, and the victory prompted celebrations in Jharkhand's Simdega district where locals danced to tribal songs on Friday. The penultimate day of competition produced the six-gold haul, comprising the women's hockey triumph, three boxing golds, an archery gold and wrestler Sujeet Kalkal's gold. That sequence pushed India into fifth place on the medal table with 76 medals: 16 gold, 25 silver and 35 bronze.

India now has more overall medals than fourth-placed Uzbekistan, which stands on 65, but Uzbekistan leads India by four gold medals.
