India’s Test dominance in Sri Lanka ahead of Galle opener

India will play the opening Test against Sri Lanka in Galle on August 15, marking their first red-ball assignment in Sri Lanka in nine years. The series forms part of India’s campaign to climb the World Test Championship standings.

Much has changed since Virat Kohli's side completed a 3-0 clean sweep in 2017: Shubman Gill is the new captain and several familiar faces have moved on. Despite that turnover, India’s success on Sri Lankan soil has been remarkably consistent and the island has shifted from a daunting venue for visitors to one where India have frequently asserted control.

India’s last Test series defeat in Sri Lanka came in 2008, when debutant mystery spinner Ajantha Mendis took 26 wickets in three Tests and Muttiah Muralitharan claimed 21 as Sri Lanka won the series 2-1 in a spin-dominated contest. That result remains the most recent series loss for India in Sri Lanka.

In 2010 India recovered from an opening defeat to draw the three-Test series 1-1, levelling the contest with a five-wicket victory in Colombo after the second Test ended in a draw. Five years later, Kohli’s side responded to an opening-Test loss in Galle by winning the next two matches to seal a 2-1 series victory, ending a 22-year wait for a Test series triumph in Sri Lanka.

The 2017 tour produced a 3-0 whitewash for India, with victories by 304 runs in Galle, by an innings and 53 runs in Colombo, and by an innings and 171 runs in Pallekele. The clean sweep cemented India’s reputation as one of the world’s finest travelling Test teams.

Sri Lankan conditions favour quality spin, patient batting and tactical discipline, and India have repeatedly fielded world-class spinners — Anil Kumble, Harbhajan Singh, Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja — to match those conditions. Batters including Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Virender Sehwag, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane and Virat Kohli have produced notable performances on the island, and India have shown an improved temperament overseas by posting imposing first-innings totals and applying pressure with both spin and pace.

Among the nine overseas countries where India have played Test cricket, Sri Lanka ranks as their third-most successful destination in terms of win percentage, behind only Bangladesh and Zimbabwe, and India have won their last five Tests on the island. India’s win rate in Sri Lanka stands at 39.13 percent, compared with an overall home Test win percentage of 41.27 percent.

The upcoming series arrives with selection and injury questions: India begin under Shubman Gill with several stalwarts no longer in the Test set-up and injuries forcing changes, including the absence of Jasprit Bumrah and placed greater responsibility on a younger bowling attack. The opening Test in Galle on August 15 will begin India’s return to Sri Lanka and will count towards their World Test Championship campaign.
