India has won 29 medals at the World Wrestling Championships through the 2026 Astana edition, including two golds by Sushil Kumar in 2010 and Manisha Bhanwala in 2026. The overall tally stands at two gold, seven silver and 20 bronze.

Indian wrestlers have increased their World Championship returns in recent years, collecting 18 medals since 2018. Only one of India’s medals at the World Championships has come in Greco-Roman wrestling. The country’s first podium finish was Udey Chand’s bronze in the men’s 67kg freestyle at the 1961 Championships in Yokohama, Japan.

India’s first World Championship silver came in New Delhi in 1967 when Bishamber Singh’s result was upgraded to silver in the men’s freestyle 57kg category. That upgrade provided the nation with its second historic medal at the event.

Alka Tomar became the first Indian woman to win a World Championship medal when she took bronze in the women’s 59kg at the 2006 Guangzhou Championships. Vinesh Phogat and Antim Panghal are the only two Indian women to have won multiple medals at the World Championships. Separately, Manisha Dhanwala is described as the first-ever Indian women’s wrestling world champion after clinching the women’s 59kg title at the 2026 Astana edition.

Sushil Kumar remains the first Indian to capture World Championship gold, having won the men’s freestyle 66kg title at the 2010 Moscow World Championships.

Bajrang Punia has collected the most World Championship medals for India with four podium finishes: one silver and three bronze.

The 2019 edition was India’s most fruitful in terms of medal count, when the team won four bronze medals and Deepak Punia secured a silver.
