India’s WTC 2025-27 final chances if Galle Test is washed out

India face a more difficult route to the ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 final if the first Test against Sri Lanka at Galle International Stadium, which began on August 15, is washed out after rain interruptions.

India are currently engaged in a two-match Test series in Sri Lanka and sit fifth in the WTC points table, needing to finish in the top two to reach the final; their 0–2 home series defeat to South Africa last year has already damaged their prospects. To improve their standing they must win most of their remaining fixtures, beginning with both Tests against Sri Lanka, and they have nine matches left in the cycle.

At present India’s WTC win percentage is 48.15%. To remain in contention they would have to win the bulk of those nine games, because losing even one match would leave them dependent on other teams’ results.

By comparison, the second finalist in the previous WTC cycle finished on 67.54%. A run of seven wins and two losses would move India to 62.96%, while eight wins and one loss would lift them to 68.52%, which would most likely seal the deal.

If the first Test at Galle is abandoned, India’s percentage would fall to 46.66%, further narrowing their margin for error and increasing the necessity of near-perfect results in the remaining fixtures.

India’s immediate schedule after the Sri Lanka series includes a two-match Test tour of New Zealand followed by a five-match home Test series against Australia; securing almost all remaining wins across those nine matches is presented in the scenarios above as the clearest path back into the top two.
