India to face Panama in friendly at Sree Kanteerava Stadium

India will play Panama at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium on Friday in an international friendly, the first of a run of high-profile fixtures against nations that featured at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Over the next fortnight the national team will meet Panama, Brazil and Uruguay as part of a rare sequence of matches that offer India a measure of its level against stronger international opposition. India coach Khalid Jamil will look to expose his players to the pace, intensity and tactical demands of top-level football, while also having to manage rustiness with the Indian Super League yet to begin and several players short of competitive match practice.

Experienced goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu remains an important figure for India ahead of the friendly. Midfielder Anirudh Thapa’s ability to dictate play and Ryan Williams’ direct running are singled out as potential on-field influences for the hosts.

Khalid Jamil could adopt a cautious approach and defend in numbers, with the team likely to seek opportunities on the counter; when they come, Williams and Manvir Singh will be expected to convert them into meaningful chances.

Panama, ranked 44th in the world, were eliminated at the World Cup in the group stage following defeats to Ghana, Croatia and England. Fourteen members of Panama’s squad had featured in that World Cup campaign.

Five-time World Cup winner Brazil (on October 3) and Uruguay (on October 6) follow Panama and will present tougher challenges for India during this fortnight of fixtures.

The first examination of the gulf between Indian football and the international elite begins on Friday at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium, with matches against Brazil on October 3 and Uruguay on October 6 to come.
