India to face two-time World champion Uruguay at Salt Lake Stadium on Tuesday

India meet two-time World champion Uruguay at Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata on Tuesday as the international window draws to a close, setting up what the national team’s coaching staff have called an intriguing test.
The match follows India’s 1-1 draw with Panama and a 0-4 defeat by Brazil in this window, results that leave Khalid Jamil’s side seeking a stronger showing against higher-ranked opposition. Jamil has assembled a squad combining experienced players with emerging names, aiming to learn from the Brazil outing and improve both defensive discipline and attacking efficiency.
Ryan Williams, who gave up his Australian citizenship to play for India, is expected to lead the frontline after scoring against Panama. Manvir Singh, Edmund Lalrindika and Vikram Partap Singh are available as further options in the final third alongside Williams.
Anirudh Thapa’s return to the side brings additional experience to midfield alongside Apuia and Sahal Abdul Samad. The defence is likely to feature Anwar Ali, Abhishek Singh Tekcham, Bijoy Varghese and Akash Mishra, while goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu will aim to rebound from what the report described as a rather poor outing against Brazil.
Uruguay arrive under Diego Forlan, who is beginning a new chapter as head coach in his first international window, and have recent form that includes a 4-1 victory over South Korea on September 28. That result came after a 3-1 defeat by Japan; Darwin Nunez scored twice in Seoul and is identified as Uruguay’s foremost attacking threat. Federico Valverde and Giorgian de Arrascaeta are missing through injury.
The teams previously met in Kolkata during the 1982 Nehru Gold Cup, when Uruguay won 3-1 at the Eden Gardens, and the South American side returns to the city 44 years later with a different context and roster. For Jamil, the immediate task is to restore belief by showing India can restrict a celebrated opponent and convert any opportunities that arise.
The fixture at Salt Lake Stadium on Tuesday gives India a clear chance to measure themselves against one of world football’s established teams and to attempt to narrow that gap, even if only for a single evening.
