India to meet England in final Pool D match at FIH Women’s Hockey World Cup 2026 in Amstelveen

India will face England in the final Pool D match of the FIH Women’s Hockey World Cup 2026 at the Wagener Hockey Stadium in Amstelveen on Thursday, August 20, with a top-two finish and progression to Round 2 at stake.
Pool D is tightly poised: India sit top on four points from two matches, level with China but ahead on goal difference, while England lie third on three points. India opened the campaign with a 2-2 draw against China and followed it with a 6-1 win over South Africa; China beat England 4-2 and England defeated South Africa 4-0.
India’s 6-1 victory featured six different scorers, a distribution the team highlighted as a positive. Teenagers Sakshi Rana and Sunelita Toppo were among the scorers against South Africa, while senior players Neha, Navneet Kaur, Lalremsiami and Sushila Chanu have contributed experience and form to the side that includes 11 World Cup debutants and is led by captain Salima.
“It will be an exciting match,” said India’s chief coach Sjoerd Marijne. “Last time we lost against them (in FIH World Cup qualifiers) and it’s now to see the progress we have made and if we did come closer to them.” India’s draw with China was described in preview coverage as a hard-fought performance that showed composure and resilience.
England arrive needing a win to guarantee a top-two finish; their 4-0 win over South Africa demonstrated their attacking threat, while their 2-4 loss to China leaves them under pressure. The match is framed as a test of both skill and temperament for India, who will aim to reproduce the energy, defensive discipline and attacking variety seen in their opening two games.
The fixture is scheduled to start at 6:30 pm Indian Time on August 20. A draw will be sufficient for India to secure a top-two finish and advance to Round 2; England must beat India to guarantee progression, and if the match ends in a draw England would require China to lose to South Africa in the other Pool D game to advance.
