India will meet Malaysia in the men's hockey final at the Asian Games on Saturday, with the winners taking the gold medal and securing qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

The match carries extra significance for captain Harmanpreet Singh and veteran Manpreet Singh: a win would make Harmanpreet the first Indian captain to lead the men's team to two successive Asian Games gold medals, while Manpreet, who was part of India’s gold-winning teams in 2014 and 2023, could become the only Indian player to win three Asian Games gold medals. Defender Jarmanpreet Singh reflected on the occasion and the Olympic stakes, saying, “It's a great feeling because winning this match was very important for us, and we have reached the finals by winning the match; this is the biggest thing. This event is quite important for us to qualify for the Olympics, and if we win a medal tomorrow, it will be history that we have won two gold medals back-to-back, and it will be the first time this happens. So I think we will focus on the next match now,” he said.

India will again look to captain Harmanpreet Singh to lead from the front; he has scored 10 goals from penalty corners and sits second in the tournament scoring charts behind Pakistan's Sufiyan Khan. Abhishek and Dilpreet Singh have each contributed nine goals for India, underscoring the team's reliance on its primary attackers. Malaysia also possess prolific scorers in Faizal Saari and Abu Kamal Azrai, who have each scored nine goals in the tournament.

The India coach urged the squad to concentrate on their own preparation, saying, "We want to focus on just our own game plan, put our proactive mindset into the game and leave it all out there on the pitch," he said. India chief coach Craig Fulton anticipated an open, attacking contest, stating, "Malaysia have done well, had a good tournament so far, so it's going to be a nice match-up. We haven't played Malaysia for quite some time. I think the last time was at the Asian Champions Trophy in Chennai. (These are) two nice attacking teams, lots of skill, lots of flair, lots of speed," Fulton said.

Malaysia enter the final unbeaten, having won all five of their matches and reached this stage after a 2-1 semifinal victory over South Korea. The result took Malaysia to their second Asian Games final in the last three editions and, according to the report, showed their ability to stay composed under pressure.

India reached the final after a dramatic 4-3 semifinal win over Pakistan in which they led 3-0 before Pakistan levelled the score at 3-3; Abhishek scored the decisive goal in the final minute of regulation time. India also missed several penalty-corner opportunities during that match, and with only a day's gap between the semifinal and the gold-medal match, recovery, composure and attention to detail will be crucial.

The men's hockey final on Saturday presents India with the chance to defend their Asian Games title, become the first Indian side to win consecutive gold medals at the event, and secure a place at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
