India to meet Sri Lanka in Asian Games semi after all men's quarter-finals washed out

India will face Sri Lanka in a men's cricket semi-final at the Asian Games after Sri Lanka's quarter-final against Nepal in Nagoya was abandoned because of rain on Tuesday.

The Sri Lanka–Nepal fixture at Korogi Sports Park was called off without a toss as persistent rain made play impossible, and Sri Lanka progressed to the last four by virtue of a higher ICC T20I ranking; Sri Lanka are ninth and Nepal 14th. The abandonment completed a sweep of washed-out men's quarter-finals at the tournament.

India had already secured a semi-final berth when their quarter-final with Afghanistan was abandoned on Monday. The defending champions are ranked No. 1 in the ICC T20I rankings, while Afghanistan are 10th.

Bangladesh reached the semi-finals after their quarter-final with Malaysia was also washed out in Nagoya. Pakistan advanced earlier when their quarter-final against Hong Kong was abandoned, with the higher-ranked side progressing; Pakistan will meet Bangladesh in the other semi-final.

Both last-four matches are scheduled to be played on Thursday, with organisers coping with persistent rain that has affected play in Nagoya over the past few days. Weather disruptions have altered multiple fixtures across the men's tournament.

Nepal's final group-stage match against Japan on Saturday was reduced to 15 overs, with Nepal making 149 for four before rain returned and prevented Japan from starting their chase. Nepal had opened their campaign with a five-wicket win over Afghanistan.

India are yet to play a match at the Asian Games; Shreyas Iyer is leading the side with VVS Laxman taking over as coach in the absence of Gautam Gambhir, who is with the ODI team for India's ongoing home series against the West Indies. The squad includes senior players such as Jasprit Bumrah and 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.

After India's quarter-final was washed out, leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi said: "Hopefully, in the upcoming games, we will get the opportunity to play some good cricket and show our game to the people in Japan," and added: "The Asian Games are definitely a different experience from the other series and World Cups. You get to see different sports and experience them as well."

Both semi-finals — India vs Sri Lanka and Pakistan vs Bangladesh — are scheduled for Thursday.
