India to open Women's T20 Asia Cup against Thailand in Dubai
Harmanpreet Kaur’s India are set to begin their Women’s T20 Asia Cup campaign against Thailand in Dubai on August 30, 2026, and head coach Amol Muzumdar said the team will focus only on the opening match rather than on potential future fixtures. “Of course, we don't want to reveal it. Look, we try to play the best cricket on the ground. And off the field stuff, we don't focus on,” Muzumdar said.
India enter the tournament having lost nine of their 16 T20Is this year and after a group-stage exit from the recent T20 World Cup, raising questions about consistency. The side have won three of the five T20 Asia Cup editions played since 2016-17 and are drawn in Group A alongside Thailand, Hong Kong and Pakistan.
Muzumdar stressed immediate focus on Thailand and on executing match plans rather than looking ahead to an India–Pakistan meeting, adding: “We try to play the best cricket that we know on that particular day. And we will speak about this when we play that game. But at the moment, we are focusing on tomorrow's game.” He also highlighted conditions in Dubai and said the pitches had shown “a little bit of help for the spinners” during India’s practice sessions.
On the bowling side, India have several spin options available, with Deepti Sharma expected to spearhead the attack and Shree Charani, Radha Yadav and Prema Rawat as additional choices; Charani was the highest wicket-taker at the T20 World Cup. The pace group includes Renuka Singh Thakur alongside Kranti Gaud, Arundhati Reddy and Nandani Sharma, providing experience and variety the coach said the team can utilise in slow conditions.
Thailand arrive after a narrow win over Hong Kong, posting 120 for nine from a sedate start and then defending the total as Hong Kong were restricted to 114 for seven. Captain Naruemol Chaiwai made 43, Onnicha Kamchomphu took 3/27 and Phannita Maya finished with 2/22 in Thailand’s opening victory.
India’s batting will rely on the top-order pair of Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma to provide strong starts, but the team’s middle-order responsibility has drawn scrutiny following the absence of Jemimah Rodrigues and the inclusion of Pratika Rawal for the Asia Cup and Asian Games. Fielding remains a concern after the recent T20 campaign, with the report noting: Their last T20 campaign exposed worrying lapses, particularly around the boundary, where dropped chances contributed to their downfall.
Harmanpreet’s form and leadership will attract attention after she “produced when India needed her most in their crucial World Cup clash against Australia,” though inconsistency across that tournament was highlighted in assessments of the side. Muzumdar underlined the squad’s youth and room for improvement, saying: “We don't pay too much attention to the form. You are talking about 16 T20Is in the last six months. But at the same time, we know what scope of improvement this team has got.”
India's opening Group A fixture against Thailand offers a chance to begin rebuilding momentum ahead of the next phase of competition; the Asia Cup precedes the Asian Games in Japan next month, events Muzumdar said the team wants to use to “set the tone for the next six months.”
