India secured a direct spot in the last eight, while Afghanistan completed two group-stage fixtures, beating Japan by 48 runs but suffering a 5-wicket defeat to Nepal. India and Afghanistan will meet for the fourth time this month. The two-time T20I World Cup champions hosted Afghanistan for a three-match series earlier this month, which the former won 3-0. The Afghan Atalans have never won a T20I game against the last edition’s gold medalists.

India decided to field a full-strength squad for the Asian Games 2026. Afghanistan retained only two players who toured India earlier this month: Darwish Rasooli (the captain) and Abdollah Ahmadzai. Those selection choices set contrasting approaches for the quarter-final encounter.
