India v Wales: India open FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup 2026 in Amstelveen
India will meet Wales at the Wagener Hockey Stadium in Amstelveen, Netherlands in the opening match of the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup 2026 on August 15, coinciding with India’s Independence Day.
India enter the tournament carrying the memory of their sole World Cup triumph in 1975, when Ajit Pal Singh captained the side to the title in Kuala Lumpur, 51 years ago. Harmanpreet Singh will lead India at his second World Cup, having first captained the side at the 2023 edition, and becomes only the second Indian after Ajit Pal Singh to captain the team at two World Cups. For Harmanpreet and his squad the organisers note the need to convert that history into on-field results.
India’s build-up included an improved finish to the final leg of the FIH Pro League, with victories over reigning world champions Germany and Olympic champions the Netherlands. The team also recorded two wins over Pakistan and advanced past England via a shootout in the lead-up to the World Cup. Those opponents—Pakistan and England—are drawn alongside India in the same pool, adding context to those warm-up results.
India have been placed in Pool D with England, Pakistan and Wales; they face Wales on August 15, England on August 17 and Pakistan on August 19. The compact pool schedule leaves little margin for error, with the early results carrying weight for progression.
The tournament format will not include a conventional quarter-final stage: the top two teams from each of the four initial pools progress to the second phase, with the top eight split into Pools E and F and the remaining eight into Pools G and H. The teams finishing in the top two of Pools E and F will qualify for the semi-finals, and teams will carry forward the results and points earned against the other qualifier from their original pool.
The India squad blends experience and youth: Mandeep Singh and Manpreet Singh will each make their fourth World Cup appearance, while Manpreet has amassed an extraordinary 417 international appearances as a new India record and will be the most-capped Indian at the tournament. The side’s experienced core includes Harmanpreet, Hardik Singh, Amit Rohidas, Vivek Sagar Prasad, Sumit and Nilakanta Sharma, and the squad contains eight World Cup debutants. "Our strength is our diversity," said the team’s Chief Coach, Craig Fulton. Both goalkeepers, Suraj Karkera and Mohith HS, will be appearing at their first World Cup.
Several personal storylines accompany the squad: Yashdeep Siwach will make his World Cup debut in a family link to the tournament, as his mother Pritam Siwach also represented India at a World Cup. The next-wave players named include Rajinder Singh, Aditya, Yashdeep and Shilanand Lakra, supported by established performers Jarmanpreet Singh, Sanjay, Dilpreet, Abhishek and Jugraj Singh. “If you look at India’s legacy of the Olympics, it’s very, very powerful. But we last won a World Cup was 51 years ago. So we want to write our own piece of Indian history. That’s the big goal,” Fulton concluded.
The Pool D opener against Wales is scheduled for August 15 at the Wagener Hockey Stadium and will begin at 4:30 pm Indian Time; India’s women will play their first World Cup match against China on Sunday.
