India v West Indies: recap of their last ODI series in 2023
India and the West Indies met in a three-match One-Day International series in 2023, with fixtures at Kensington Oval in Barbados and the decider at Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba, Trinidad. The two sides have not played an ODI series against each other since 2023 and are due to meet again later this month. West Indies most recently contested a five-match ODI series against New Zealand in July, winning the opener by 7 wickets before losing three consecutive games while attempting to defend totals and dropping the series 3-2; all five matches in that series were won by the chasing side. India’s latest ODI set was a three-match home series against England in which India won the first match by 6 wickets but England won the next two; those ODIs were followed by a five-match T20I series that India lost 4-0.
The 2023 ODI series formed part of India’s preparation for the ICC Cricket World Cup, where the Men in Blue finished as runner-ups while the West Indies failed to qualify. That context shaped selections and workload for both squads during the three-match encounter.
India opened the 2023 series at Kensington Oval with a five-wicket victory in the first match, aided by a combined total of seven wickets from Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav. Those bowling performances set the tone for India’s attack in the opening fixture.
In the second ODI, played at the same Barbados venue, West Indies recovered to level the series; Rohit Sharma was rested and Hardik Pandya captained India. The Men in Blue were bowled out for 181 and lost that match by 6 wickets with 13 overs to spare.
The series decider at Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba saw India post a target of 352. Mukesh Kumar took three wickets while Shardul Thakur dismissed four batters as the West Indies were dismantled for 151 in the final game.
The teams also met in the ICC T20 World Cup earlier this year, and they are scheduled to play a three-match series of 50-over matches starting from September 27.
