India wins 17 medals, including four gold, at U-23 Commonwealth Fencing Championship in Lagos

India won 17 medals, including four gold, at the U-23 Commonwealth Fencing Championship in Lagos, Nigeria, after the opening day of competition.

Team India captured four gold, four silver and nine bronze medals, the Fencing Association of India said, with at least one Indian fencer reaching the podium in each of the six individual events across Sabre, Foil and Epee.

In the men's Sabre, Nikhil Wagh took gold, Lakshay Badser won silver and Ashwini Arya and Laishram Moramba shared the two bronze medals to complete a four-way victory for India.

In men's Foil Tejas Patil earned silver while Hemash Sanasam added a bronze, and in men's Epee Lokesh Vemani won silver with Shaurya Ashwini and Godwin Anbkess each taking bronze.

On the women's side Joys Ashita claimed gold in Foil with teammate Kanaglakshmi finishing second, and in women's Epee Prachi Lohan won gold while Nivedhya Nair and Anupriya both took bronze.

In women's Sabre Jeferlin won gold, Aakhari took silver and Shreya Gupta secured a bronze to round out the women's medals.

Shri Rajeev Mehta, Secretary General of the Fencing Association of India, said, "I extend my heartiest congratulations to all our medal winners, coaches, support staff, and families for their relentless dedication and contribution to India's remarkable performance."

The U-23 Commonwealth Fencing Championship began on Sunday and will run till August 14 in Lagos.
