India women have one Asian Games gold, won at Hangzhou 2022

India women have won one gold medal at the Asian Games, secured when they beat Sri Lanka in the final of the cricket tournament at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games by 19 runs; Harmanpreet Kaur captained India in that debut campaign.

Cricket first appeared at the Asian Games in Guangzhou in 2010, with nine nations in the men’s event and seven contesting the women’s medals. Bangladesh and Pakistan won medals across both events in 2010, while India did not take part in either competition. Pakistan’s women, led by Sana Mir, took the inaugural women’s gold that year. It was also the only time Japan won a medal in Asian Games cricket, finishing third in the women’s event ahead of China, Hong Kong, Nepal, Thailand, and Malaysia.

The tournament expanded at the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea, and Pakistan successfully defended the women’s title, this time under Bismah Maroof after Sana Mir’s captaincy. Bangladesh earned their second silver in the event, while Sri Lanka collected their first bronze in Asian Games cricket.

Cricket was not included in the 2018 Asian Games programme, and the sport returned at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games in the post-COVID era. India took part in the Asian Games cricket competition for the first time in 2022; the Board of Control for Cricket in India cited a tight international schedule as a major reason for the country’s earlier decisions not to participate.

In Hangzhou, India defeated Sri Lanka by 19 runs to claim the gold. Bangladesh beat Pakistan by 5 wickets to secure a place on the podium and deny the two-time defending champions any medal in 2022. Across Asian Games cricket history, Pakistan’s overall medal haul stands at two golds and one bronze.
