India women thrash Indonesia 17-1 in Asian Games hockey as men's kabaddi beat Japan 49-24
India's women's hockey side routed Indonesia 17-1 at the Asian Games on Monday in their second Pool B match, while India's men's kabaddi team opened its Group A campaign with a 49-24 win over hosts Japan on the same day.
The hockey victory followed an opening 19-0 win over Uzbekistan, underlining India's scoring form in Pool B; Deepika Sehrawat, Rutuja Dadaso Pisal and Navneet Kaur each recorded hat-tricks, Sunelita Toppo, Lalremsiami and Sakshi Rana scored doubles, and captain Salima Tete and Ishika Chaudhary added one goal apiece.
India were awarded an early penalty stroke that Navneet Kaur failed to convert, but the breakthrough arrived from a penalty corner and the hosts rapidly extended their lead through a combination of set-piece finishes, rebounds and open-play finishes to lead 9-0 by the interval.
The scoring sheet shows Deepika Sehrawat converted penalty corners in the 8th, 28th and 40th minutes; Rutuja Dadaso Pisal struck from open play in the 15th, 20th and 38th minutes; Navneet Kaur's hat-trick came in the 35th, 56th and 57th minutes; Sunelita Toppo's goals were in the 11th and 30th minutes; Lalremsiami scored in the 12th and 16th minutes; Sakshi Rana scored in the 25th and 57th minutes; Salima Tete and Ishika Chaudhary contributed one goal each; Indonesia's lone goal came from Innes Aditiya, who converted a penalty corner in the 32nd minute.
In men's kabaddi, India took control from the start and led 31-9 at half-time en route to a 49-24 victory over Japan, with Ayan Lohchab and Devank Dalal prominent among the raiders; India added a further 18 points after the break to finish 25 points clear.
India accumulated 36 points through successful outs, eight points from all-outs and two from super tackles in that match; the men's team are in Group A alongside Japan, South Korea, Chinese Taipei and Bangladesh.
India's women's hockey team will meet Thailand in their next Pool B match on Wednesday, India's men's kabaddi side face South Korea on Tuesday, and the Indian women's kabaddi team begin their title defence against Bangladesh later on Monday.
