India women to meet China in Aichi-Nagoya final with Asian Games gold on October 2

India will face defending champions China in the women’s hockey gold-medal match at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya on October 2. The final will decide the continental champion and carries additional stakes for both sides.
Forty-four years have passed since India’s only Asian Games women’s hockey gold in 1982; the team finished runners-up in 1998 and 2018 after defeats to South Korea and Japan respectively. India’s 2026 season has included lifting the FIH Nations Cup earlier this year and achieving their best World Cup finish in 52 years with fifth place at the 2026 World Cup in Belgium and the Netherlands.
Both India and China topped their pools with perfect records but required hard-fought semi-final wins to reach the final. China drew 0-0 with hosts Japan after 60 minutes and prevailed 4-2 in the shootout to progress. India were tested by South Korea before Ishika broke the deadlock late in the third quarter and captain Salima Tete added a second in the fourth quarter to secure victory.
Commenting on the semi-final, India’s Chief Coach, Sjoerd Marijne, said, “For us it was really important to stay calm and have patience, and I think we did that really well.” On the forthcoming final he said, “We have confidence, but we also realize that China is a very good team. They are still No. 4 in the world. We did really well at the World Cup, better than them, but still they have a lot of experience… Some things we can improve (from the semi-final performance), and that’s how we approach the final against China.”
India’s campaign has been underpinned by a mix of defensive organisation and varied attacking options, with goalkeepers Savita and Bichu Devi named as a strong last line of defence. The side’s World Cup campaign offered a recent benchmark against China, holding world No. 4 China to a goalless draw in Amsterdam.
Scoring has been a major factor for India: Deepika leads the tournament with 21 goals in six matches, 19 of them from penalty corners, while Navneet has 10 goals, seven from field play. China’s main contributors are Zhong Jiaqi with nine goals, and Chen Yi and Zhang Ying with seven each.
The Asian Games final will also determine the continent’s qualification place for the LA 2028 Olympic Games. The women’s hockey gold-medal match is scheduled for October 2 at the Gifu Prefectural Green Stadium in Aichi-Nagoya, beginning at 7 pm local time (3:30 pm IST).
