Indian women fight back to beat Singapore 3-2; men swept 0-3 by Iran at Asian Games

India's women's table tennis team recovered from 1-2 down to beat Singapore 3-2 at the Asian Games on Sunday, September 20, 2026, while the Indian men's team lost 0-3 to Iran in Group F matches.

India's women trailed 1-2 before Sreeja Akula and Yashaswini Ghorpade won their respective matches to clinch the tie. The men's side were beaten by Iran 3-0. Both Indian teams had opened their Asian Games campaigns with 3-0 victories over Indonesia.

Yashaswini Ghorpade opened the women's tie by defeating Jian Zeng 11-7, 11-3, 8-11, 11-9. Sreeja Akula then lost 8-11, 11-4, 9-11, 11-4, 6-11 to Loy Ming. Diya Chitale went down 7-11, 4-11, 11-7, 5-11 to Tan Zhao as Singapore moved 2-1 ahead. Sreeja bounced back to beat Jian Zeng 6-11, 11-3, 11-7, 11-4 to level the tie at 2-2, and Ghorpade secured the decider with a 5-11, 11-8, 12-10, 4-11, 11-9 win over Loy Ming.

In the men's match, Manush Shah lost the opening rubber 3-11, 8-11, 10-12 to Noshad Alamiyan. Manav Thakkar was defeated 2-11, 6-11, 6-11 by Benyamin Faraji. Harmeet Desai was beaten in five games by Alamiyan, 10-12, 15-13, 3-11, 12-10, 2-11, as Iran completed a 3-0 victory.

India's women's team had earlier beaten Indonesia 3-0, Sreeja overcoming Ni Maharani 11-3, 8-11, 11-4, 11-4. Diya Chitale followed with an 11-9, 11-8, 11-5 win over Almaira Nebuchadnezzar, and Ghorpade sealed that tie with a 12-10, 11-4, 11-4 victory over Citra Rasmi.

The men's side's opening 3-0 win over Indonesia featured Sathiyan Gnanasekaran defeating Muhammad Negara 11-8, 11-7, 11-9. Manav Thakkar prevailed 11-7, 8-11, 11-6, 6-11, 11-9 against Muhammad Junindra, and Manush Shah completed the sweep with an 11-9, 11-9, 12-10 victory over Affan Pratama.

Both Indian teams will next face Pakistan on Monday. The women's team are grouped alongside Indonesia, Pakistan and Singapore in Group F, while the men's team are clubbed with Iran, Pakistan and Indonesia.
