Insomniac outlines Marvel’s Wolverine combat, PS5 60 FPS with ray tracing and story setting ahead of Sept. 15 launch

Insomniac Games revealed fresh gameplay and performance details for Marvel’s Wolverine in preview coverage published on August 14, 2026, ahead of the game’s PlayStation 5 launch on September 15, 2026. The developer highlighted combat mechanics, narrative setting and PS5 performance targets including 60 FPS with ray tracing enabled by default on the standard PS5.
The studio confirmed the story is set in Earth-1048, the same universe as Marvel’s Spider-Man, and that the narrative opens with Wolverine in a feral state before returning to the main timeline. The character is described as being away from Team X for three years and is 200 years old; the opening mission shows Logan attempting to rescue Nathaniel Essex from Bolivar Trask. Insomniac said Team X will play a major role in the plot and that the group is led by Nathaniel Essex, while Lady Deathstrike heads the primary antagonistic faction known as The Hands. Jean Grey appears in the game’s hub area, Princess Bar, and the reporting includes the line "Krizia Bajos as Jean Grey 🤯" as part of early impressions.
The Hands storyline will take Wolverine to Japan and the game features several iconic locations, including an explorable Lowtown where players can interact with allies, pursue side content and collect hidden collectibles. Exploration is rewarded with upgrade materials and collectibles obtainable from hidden crates, and the hub areas provide opportunities to encounter NPCs and progress side activities. Customization options are available, with multiple Wolverine outfits and different claw types mentioned as player-selectable items.
Combat is described as brutal and animalistic, with regenerative healing abilities intended to keep fights aggressive and fast-paced. Players can unlock special abilities using skill points, and Wolverine’s enhanced senses are noted as useful for gameplay and exploration. The preview material also shows a three-tier rage meter that builds as the player attacks enemies, adding a strategic layer to engagements.
Replay and challenge systems are included: optional Nightmare Trials can be accessed through Nightmare Doors and offer timed combat challenges for additional rewards. The game will feature Mission Replay and New Game Plus modes to extend playtime and provide replayability beyond the main story.
Insomniac confirmed Logan is the only playable character, though some story sequences include combat team-ups with Mystique and Sabretooth. Yes. The game runs at 60 FPS with ray tracing enabled by default on the standard PS5. Wolverine is announced as exclusive to PlayStation 5.
Marvel’s Wolverine launches exclusively for PlayStation 5 on September 15, 2026, with the previewed features—including performance settings, combat systems and challenge content—set to be available at release.
