Inter Kashi vs East Bengal: Three individual matchups that could decide the Pune game

East Bengal FC travel to Balewadi Stadium in Pune to play Inter Kashi FC in an Indian Super League fixture on Friday, 23rd October at 17:00 IST, and this preview highlights three one-on-one battles expected to shape the match.
East Bengal enter the game as the defending ISL champions after beginning their 2026/27 league campaign with a 4-0 victory over Churchill Brothers SC, having earlier thrown away a 2-1 lead against Al Shorta SC in the 2026-27 AFC Champions League Two. Several figures within the East Bengal set-up have prior links to Inter Kashi, with five individuals — including the head coach and assistant coach — associated with the club in the last 18–24 months. Inter Kashi, however, face a markedly different situation off the field and on it, which frames the tactical matchups between the sides.
Off the field, Inter Kashi have lost the financial muscle they previously enjoyed, have been hit with multiple transfer-related penalties for failing to pay salaries and have rebuilt a squad largely composed of Indian players under Portuguese coach Carlos Vaz Pinto. On the pitch they showed intent in their opening defeat to Kerala Blasters FC, losing 2-0, and then collected their first point of the 2026/27 ISL season in a draw with Odisha FC when Thoi Singh’s long-range strike equalised after Pratik’s own goal had put Inter Kashi behind.
At right-back, Dinliana — the former Chennaiyin FC and Jamshedpur FC full-back who joined Inter Kashi ahead of the season — has been reliable, producing strong displays against the likes of Nandha and Andre Green though conceding a late goal against Green. He will likely be tested by Edmund Lalrindika, who previously represented Inter Kashi, played a role in their promotion and has registered 14 goal contributions in 32 games for East Bengal since joining last summer. Edmund’s tendency to drift into central areas from the left wing and to link play complements his goalscoring, while Dinliana can be vulnerable to wingers who continually switch positions.
In central defence, Nishchal Chandan — who left Inter Kashi for Punjab FC ahead of the season only to return a few months later — brings a tall, physical presence and relies on positional awareness and reading of the game to make interceptions and blocks. He is not noted for his ball-playing and is prepared to put his body on the line to stop chances. Chandan will be up against David Lalhlansanga, who has recorded nine goal contributions in 11 games and combines movement inside the box, low centre of gravity and the ability to link play with a dangerous shooting threat and capacity to set up his wingers.
The midfield duel to monitor is Dani Ramirez versus Jitendra Singh. Ramirez is the creative fulcrum for East Bengal, regularly producing line-breaking through balls and contributing goals from open play and set pieces, including a strike in the opening minute against Churchill Brothers SC. Jitendra has consistently won tackles and ground duels across Inter Kashi’s opening two games, making his interceptions and tackles important to disrupting Ramirez’s service, although he can be overly physical and concede free kicks in dangerous areas. It remains uncertain whether Ramirez will start, with Habas reportedly considering resting him ahead of two AFC Champions League Two clashes.
