Inter Milan defeated Fiorentina 2-1 at the San Siro in their matchweek 8 fixture of the Serie A 2026-27 season. Marcus Thuram levelled in stoppage time and then won the penalty that Piotr Zieliński converted to secure the victory.

Fiorentina, managed by Paolo Vanoli, travelled to Milan with a forward trio of Franco Mastantuono, Mateo Pellegrino and Alieu Nije but struggled in attack. Cristian Chivu’s Inter were without Lautaro Martinez, placing additional responsibility on Thuram. The contest saw Fiorentina take the lead through a 65th-minute goal from left-back Alex Jimenez. Inter extended their unbeaten run in Serie A 2026-27 while Fiorentina’s loss left them on a three-match losing run.

With Martinez absent, Marcus Thuram emerged as Inter’s most active attacker, registering nine shots on goal. He scored the stoppage-time equaliser and shortly afterwards earned the penalty that decided the match. Those contributions were central to Inter overturning the deficit late on.

Fiorentina’s opener arrived in the 65th minute when Alex Jimenez fired into the net, but their overall attacking output was limited. In the first half La Viola managed only four shots and none were on target, and their front three were kept largely in check by Inter’s defence. Fiorentina defended well for long spells against Inter’s pressing approach but conceded twice in stoppage time.

Cristian Chivu responded to falling behind with substitutions that changed Inter’s balance, bringing on Piotr Zieliński and Federico Dimarco. Zieliński helped Inter establish stronger control in midfield and converted the match-winning penalty. Chivu’s use of squad depth proved decisive after the interval.

Defensively, Inter fielded Alessandro Bastoni, Manuel Akanji and Yann Bisseck but nonetheless conceded first, leaving the side with only one clean sheet in their last four matches. Inter also found it difficult at times to breach Fiorentina’s low block, which contributed to periods of sustained pressure. The late turnaround resolved those defensive and attacking phases in Inter’s favour.

The result handed Inter three points and kept their unbeaten run intact in Serie A 2026-27, while Fiorentina dropped three points and extended their losing streak to three league matches.
