The International Olympic Committee (IOC) in Lausanne said on Tuesday (October 6, 2026) that India and six other countries have expressed interest in hosting the 2036 Olympic Games and have been invited to present their projects to the IOC's Future Host Commission in November. The IOC set an October 31 deadline for any further Interested Parties to be considered for 2036.

India submitted its Expression of Interest to host the Games in 2024. The host selection process was subsequently halted by new IOC President Kirsty Coventry, who said fresh feedback would be taken from member nations to streamline the process. The IOC said submissions will be evaluated against technical criteria intended to measure delivery capacity and long-term benefit to host communities.

"The Interested Parties currently in Continuous Dialogue with the IOC, with a stated interest in hosting the 2036 Olympic Games, are (in alphabetical order): Germany, Hungary, India, Qatar, Republic of Korea, South Africa and Turkiye," read a statement from the IOC.

"There are also a number of NOCs taking part in noncommittal talks with the IOC about hosting future Olympic Games beyond 2036. The Interested Parties have been invited to present their projects to the Future Host Commission in November," it added. A file photo accompanying the statement showed the Olympic rings in front of the International Olympic Committee in Lausanne, Switzerland.

The IOC said projects will be assessed on technical factors including venue master-plan and athlete experience, funding strategy, political and public support, Games delivery capabilities, and legacy strategy to create long-term benefits for host communities. Those factors will form the basis of the Future Host Commission's review when the presentations are delivered in November.

The next formal step is for the Interested Parties to present their Games projects to the Future Host Commission in November, after which the IOC's assessment against the listed technical and legacy criteria will proceed.
