The BCCI has reportedly decided that the Indian Premier League's 2027 player auction will be held in India, a conclusion attributed to the IPL Governing Council meeting on September 15, according to media reports. The board has not yet announced the exact date or venue for the auction.
Recent IPL auctions were staged outside India, making the choice of a domestic site a notable development; the last India-based auction took place in Kochi in 2023, with subsequent events held in Dubai, Jeddah and Abu Dhabi. The IPL 2026 auction was staged at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, on December 16, 2025. Organisers say the 2027 auction will not be a mega-auction, and several franchises are looking to revamp their squads after disappointing results over recent seasons.
The report citing Cricbuzz said the decision to bring the event back to India was among the key takeaways from the IPL Governing Council meeting. Officials did not finalise the date or venue during that meeting; the BCCI is still determining the auction timeline, which some reports place around mid-December.
Logistical considerations remain a factor in the venue selection. The BCCI will assess accommodation availability before confirming a host city, and the report stated the board would need at least 100 hotel rooms to accommodate franchise officials and delegations. Organisers flagged that room availability tends to be lower in the October-December period because of the peak wedding season.
Rule changes were also discussed at the governing council meeting. The Impact Player rule was formally raised for consideration, but the report said no final decision has been taken on that matter. The IPL 2027 Auction will be a mini-auction, according to the same reporting.
