Ishan Kishan ruled out of 2nd T20I; Vaibhav Sooryavanshi the likely replacement

Ishan Kishan has been ruled out of India’s second T20I against New Zealand in Christchurch on Saturday after suffering a low-grade right adductor strain during the series opener, the BCCI confirmed on Friday, October 23. The injury creates a vacancy in India’s batting order and 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is the frontrunner to fill it.
India won the first T20I by four wickets while chasing 226 runs; during that match Tilak Varma was promoted to No. 3 and Kishan batted at No. 5, scoring one run off three deliveries. The BCCI said the medical team is monitoring Kishan’s recovery but confirmed he will miss the second match in Christchurch. The absence forces a selection decision for Saturday’s game.
Sooryavanshi missed the first T20I but has been involved in team batting practice and fielding drills, which has fuelled speculation about his inclusion. He has scored 246 runs in 8 T20I appearances at a strike rate of 186.36, including two half-centuries, and also featured in India’s Asian Games semi-final and final encounters. Those credentials position him as a natural top-order option.
Batting coach Sitanshu Kotak acknowledged the youngster could step in following Kishan’s injury, and selectors will need to consider the batting-order implications of picking an opener. Sooryavanshi is primarily an opening batter, so his selection could require India to open with him and move Sanju Samson down to No. 3. The team must weigh that against retaining the current opening pairing.
Shivam Dube is available as an alternative if management prefers to keep Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson at the top and add more middle-order batting depth plus an extra seam-bowling option. Dube generally operates in the middle order, so his inclusion would be a different tactical choice rather than a like-for-like replacement for Kishan. Team balance and the desired combination will determine whether India opt for that route.
Kishan sustained the low-grade right adductor strain during the first T20I in Christchurch and the BCCI did not provide a definite recovery timeline when confirming he would miss the second match. His availability for the remaining games of the series will depend on his progress and assessments from the medical team.
India lead the five-match series 1-0 after the opening win, and the playing XI for the second T20I in Christchurch on Saturday will reveal whether Sooryavanshi takes the vacant spot or the selectors prefer an alternative such as Dube.
