Kerala Blasters FC have completed the signing of 32-year-old English centre-back James Bolton on a free transfer for the upcoming Indian Super League (ISL) 2025-26 season.

Bolton, who began his career in the Macclesfield U19 academy and earned promotion to Macclesfield's senior side in 2012, arrives with roughly a decade and a half of professional experience. Early in his career he had loan spells at Workington AFC, Stafford and Halifax Town, and he joined Halifax Town on a permanent deal after his Macclesfield contract ended. The defender is from Stone, England, and has spent almost his entire professional career in English and Scottish football.

After a brief spell at Gateshead, Bolton moved to League One where he spent two years apiece with Shrewsbury Town and Portsmouth. He signed for Plymouth Argyle in 2021 and was part of the squad that won the League One title in the 2022/23 season. After Plymouth he moved to St. Mirren in Scotland, before joining Fleetwood, the club he last represented.

Across his career Bolton has made 413 appearances, including four for the England C team. The breakdown of his appearances in the source material lists 200 matches as a right-back, 152 as a centre-back and six as a right-midfielder, with 28 goals and 15 assists recorded.

Khel Now previously reported that Kerala Blasters had completed other additions, including former Aston Villa winger Andre Green and Montenegro international Nebojša Kosović, and a number of domestic signings. The club has brought in players such as Amrinder Singh, Mohammed Sanan, Mohammed Yasir, Sahil Tavora, Ramhlunchhunga and Paul Ramfangzauva, and is set to finalise deals for Mohammed Sanan, Amrinder Singh, Sahil Tavora, Ramhlunchhunga and Mohammed Yasir ahead of the 2026-27 season; Aiban Dohling is also reported to be set to sign. Ashley Westwood is identified in the source as a central figure behind these moves as the Blasters undergo a squad overhaul under the Al Fursan era.

Bolton is expected to join the Blasters' camp this week as the team prepares in Chennai at Madraf FC’s facility ahead of their match against Inter Kashi on the 11th. The club expects him to play a central role in spearheading Kerala Blasters’ defence.

Kerala Blasters' opening schedule listed in the source shows an away match against Inter Kashi FC on 11th October, a trip to Guwahati to face NorthEast United FC on 18th October, their first home game on 25th October and an away fixture against Chennai on 31st October.

This move will be Bolton's first transfer outside European football; the source also noted that with a very brief preseason ahead of him, adaptability and building coordination with his new teammates will be key challenges for the defender.
