Chennaiyin FC defeated East Bengal FC 5-3 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Saturday in an Indian Super League fixture, recording their first win of the season. Braces from Brison Fernandes and Irfan Yadwad, plus a penalty from Ramon Tanque, supplied the goals for the hosts.

Chennaiyin produced a markedly different display from their previous four matches, adopting a style the team had rarely shown earlier in the campaign and offering fans what the report called a pre-Deepavali treat. The hosts probed from both flanks and through the centre, creating several openings across the 90 minutes. The match was played at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Saturday as part of the Indian Super League.

Brison Fernandes opened the scoring in the fourth minute after a right-side pass from Irfan left him unmarked and he slotted a powerful right-footed shot past goalkeeper Prabhsukhan Gill. He completed his brace on 18 minutes with a strong strike from outside the box.

East Bengal pulled one back in the 29th minute when Ake Loba scored from close range following an occurrence in which Daniel Ramirez dispossessed Ayush Dev and set him up. Moments later Jeakson Singh brought Brison down inside the box, and Ramon Tanque converted the penalty to restore Chennaiyin’s two-goal lead on 41 minutes.

Early in the second half a handball by Chennaiyin’s Muhammed Saheef awarded East Bengal a penalty and Daniel Ramirez made no mistake from the spot on 47 minutes. After that penalty the visitors increased their attacking intent and targeted Chennaiyin down the flanks.

Chennaiyin regained control when substitute Lalhriatpuia’s fierce shot was deflected into the net by Irfan Yadwad for the 59th-minute goal, and Irfan added his second on 67 minutes after a through pass from Ramon Tanque. East Bengal’s David Hmar reduced the deficit with a goal in the first minute of added time (90+1).

In a separate ISL match played at Pune, Inter Kashi lost 0-3 to SC Delhi, with Carlos Fortes scoring in the 6th minute, Juan Pena on 74, and Rodriguinho on 88.
