Jack Draper in tears as comeback ends with Canadian Open first-round loss

Jack Draper lost 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 to Térence Atmane in a first-round match at the Canadian Open in Montreal on 4 August 2026. The Briton was in tears during a changeover in the third set.

The match was Draper’s first appearance since withdrawing from Wimbledon with a recurrence of a bruised bone in his left arm. He had also pulled out of the DC Open in Washington last week. Draper reached a career-high ranking of No 4 in the world last summer but has been plagued by injuries since and has spent the better part of a year on the sidelines.

The 24-year-old showed clear physical issues during the contest. His serve speed had significantly dropped. He appeared concerned about his left arm while on court.

Draper holds a wildcard entry for the Cincinnati Open, beginning next week, but there will be doubts about his involvement after this defeat and about his fitness for the US Open. World No 2 Carlos Alcaraz has withdrawn from the Cincinnati Masters as he continues his recovery from a wrist injury that has sidelined him since April. Alcaraz had been slated to make his return in the tournament to prepare for the US Open, which starts on 30 August in New York.

Draper’s fellow Briton Jacob Fearnley reached the second round in Montreal with a 7-6, 6-4 victory over Adrian Mannarino.

Draper’s next confirmed engagement is the Cincinnati Open, for which he has a wildcard beginning next week, and questions remain over whether he will take part and how fit he will be ahead of the US Open on 30 August in New York.
