Jacy Maranhao falls down tunnel celebrating headed goal in Brazilian top flight

Jacy Maranhao fell down a tunnel while celebrating a headed goal for Coritiba against Chapecoense at the Couto Pereira Stadium in Curitiba, the incident occurring in the 41st minute of the Brazilian top-flight match and resulting in an ankle injury.

The 29-year-old defender had guided a header into the net with his side 1-0 up and then ran towards the supporters, vaulting an advertising hoarding before disappearing down a passage that led to the away team's dressing room. He was able to gingerly clamber out after the fall but suffered an ankle problem that forced a change.

Maranhao was substituted shortly after half-time because of the injury. "I twisted my foot there. It's a bit sore, but I'm fine," said Jacy.

He added: "Centre-backs hardly ever score goals. So when you do score ... I just got carried away." The moment of celebration was followed by VAR intervening to disallow the goal.

Despite the disallowed header, Coritiba won the match 2-1. The Couto Pereira Stadium in Curitiba has seen a similar mishap before: in 2014 Cameroon striker Joel jumped over the barriers and fell down the passageway during Coritiba's 3-1 win against Sao Paulo.

Defender Jacy Maranhao, 29, was the player involved in the incident and the game finished with Coritiba victorious 2-1.
