Jagadeesan 90 not out and disciplined bowling hand Chepauk Super Gillies a seven-wicket win in TNPL

Chepauk Super Gillies beat Dindigul Dragons by seven wickets at the NPR College Ground in the Tamil Nadu Premier League on Sunday. Captain N. Jagadeesan remained unbeaten on 90 to steer the chase after a disciplined Super Gillies bowling effort had restricted the Dragons.

After a rain-delayed start, Super Gillies elected to field and struck early through pacer Abhishek Tanwar, who returned two for 19 and had Anuraag Nair (0) and R.K. Jayant (11) caught at mid-on. A mix-up resulted in Karthik Saran (4) being run out at the non-striker’s end, leaving Dindigul 37 for three in the PowerPlay. Ashwanth Valthapa used carrom balls to take two for 20, dismissing Shivam Singh (25) and R. Vimal Khumar (21) lbw, as the ‘home team’ were held to 126 for eight.

Jagadeesan anchored Chepauk’s reply, finishing unbeaten on 90 off 58 balls with eight fours and five sixes. He reached his fifty off 43 deliveries before accelerating and struck two consecutive sixes off spinner Mohit Mittan to close the match, Chepauk finishing 131 for three in 16.2 overs.

In the second match, iDream Tiruppur Tamizhans’ openers Tushar Raheja and Amith Sathvik compiled a 119-run opening stand off 52 balls to set up an eight-wicket victory over Nellai Royal Kings. The Tamizhans chased 207 with 11 balls to spare, with Tushar unbeaten on 90 off 52 balls and Amith making 76 from 31 deliveries.

Tushar attacked pacer Emmanuel Cherian, including a lofted four and three sixes with back-to-back maximums among them, and brought up his fifty off a full toss from left-arm seamer S. Selvaganapathi. Amith struck a 104-metre six off leg-spinner B. Rocky — the longest of the season so far — and followed with three successive sixes off the same bowler.

Monday’s scheduled fixture is SKM Salem Spartans versus Madurai Panthers at 7.30 p.m.
