Jaiswal recreates Rohit’s stump-mic scolding in Instagram post ahead of Sri Lanka Tests

Yashasvi Jaiswal recalled a stump-microphone scolding from Rohit Sharma in a tongue-in-cheek Instagram post as India ramped up training ahead of the two-Test series in Sri Lanka, the first Test due to begin in Galle on August 15.

Jaiswal posted a series of training photographs accompanied by the caption: "Because once a legend said 'jab tak khelega nahi, tab tak uthneka nahi'," he wrote on his Instagram post. The line referred to an episode from the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy when Jaiswal was stationed at forward short leg and briefly rose before Steve Smith had completed his shot. Rohit was leading India at the time of that incident.

During the Australia tour moment Rohit was heard on the stump microphone saying: “Abe Jassu, gully cricket khel raha hai kya? Neeche baith ke rah (“Are you playing gully cricket? Stay down. Don’t get up until the ball has been played!)” Rohit was heard saying on the stump microphone. Star Sports posted the clip on December 26, 2024 with the caption noting the captain's on-mic banter during the 4th Test.

The exchange went viral and was widely shared as a lighter moment from India’s campaign in Australia. Months later Jaiswal revived that memory with his social media post as the squad prepared for its next Test assignment. The resurfacing of the clip attracted attention from fans ahead of the Sri Lanka series.

The two-match series is framed in the report as an opportunity for Shubman Gill’s side to build momentum in the longest format. Jaiswal is expected to remain one of India’s top-order batsmen for the assignment. Since his Test debut he has scored 2,535 runs in 29 Tests at an average of 48.75, including seven centuries and 13 half-centuries.

However, the left-hander will be keen to put together a consistent run of performances after his returns dipped during some of his recent outings. The Sri Lanka series could be important for Jaiswal as he looks to regain his rhythm and cement his position as one of the pillars of India’s Test batting unit, with the opening Test in Galle scheduled for August 15.
