Jasprit Bumrah rested and omitted from India XI for 1st T20I vs West Indies in Lucknow

Jasprit Bumrah will not play for India in the first T20I against West Indies at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on Tuesday; he is also not part of India’s squad for the T20I series.
The decision follows a high-scoring three-match ODI series between the sides that produced over 2,100 runs and ended 2-1 in India’s favour. During that ODI series India recorded a highest successful chase of 406 and West Indies posted a highest chase of 352, raising expectations for an action-packed T20I contest. The toss has been taken and the playing XIs for the first match are out, with both teams lining up strong batting units.
Bumrah featured in the Asian Games 2026 final against Pakistan on Saturday, where he conceded 33 runs without taking a wicket while Pakistan chased 212 to win. He had earlier taken 2/7 in India’s semifinal victory over Sri Lanka at the Asian Games. Those appearances formed part of his recent match workload ahead of the T20I series.
The Board and team management have given Bumrah rest to manage his workload, and he is not included in the squad for the ongoing T20I series against the West Indies. The absence of Bumrah from the playing XI for the opening match leaves India’s current bowling group to cover his role. That selection decision was communicated by the management as part of workload planning.
India are all set to tour New Zealand for a multi-format series starting October 22 (Thursday). That tour will comprise five T20Is, two Tests and five ODIs, and the management has indicated Bumrah will have a key role in those plans.
India say they intend to manage Bumrah carefully with the 2027 ODI World Cup approaching, and that each game and series selection for him will be planned accordingly. Both India and West Indies will aim to secure a winning start in the T20I series to build momentum for the remaining matches.
