Jay Meena advances to soft tennis quarterfinal at Asian Games in Nagoya

Jay Meena progressed to the quarterfinals of soft tennis at the 20th Asian Games at Higashiyama Park Tennis Centre in Nagoya, Japan on Tuesday (September 22, 2026). He moved on from the group stage and is set for a knockout-round match the following day.

Meena recorded a 4-0 win over Pakistan’s Arain Hussain in Group D to secure progression from the pool stage. That result advanced him into the quarterfinal bracket.

India’s women’s cricket team produced a dominant performance in the tournament final, with Smriti Mandhana scoring 79 as India posted 216/3. India’s bowlers then dismissed Sri Lanka for 69, Deepti Sharma finishing with an economy rate of 1.50, and India completed a 147-run victory to retain the title at the Korogi Athletics Park in Nisshin.

In shooting, India left the Aichi General Shooting Range without a medal on the third day of competition after Elavenil Valarivan and Parth Mane finished fourth in the 10m Air Rifle mixed team event. Separately, Parth Mane, aged 18, is noted in coverage as having won a silver medal at the Asian Games and is described as part of India’s emerging shooting talent.

Indian badminton had mixed results on Tuesday: the men’s team secured a medal by beating host Japan 3-0 in the quarterfinals, while the women’s team lost 1-3 to Japan at the Ichinomiya City Municipal Gymnasium. Other items from the Games’ reporting include a favourable Delhi High Court ruling that may allow wrestler Deepak to compete despite a doping case and a report that two North Korean Asian Games members have sought asylum in Japan.

Meena’s next fixture is a quarterfinal against the Philippines’ Sherwin Nuguit on Wednesday (September 23, 2026) at the Asian Games.
