Jaypal Malviya clinched the men’s 10m air pistol silver at the ISSF World Championship 2026 Rifle/Pistol/Shotgun at the Lusail Shooting Complex on Thursday, finishing the 24-shot final with 242.2 and securing India’s first Olympic quota for the Los Angeles 2028 Games.

The event offered three Olympic quota places in the men’s 10m air pistol, which were decided at the Lusail Shooting Complex during the championship. China’s Hu Kai won gold with 243.9 and claimed the first quota, while Czechia’s Jindrich Dubovy took bronze with 220.9 and the third available quota. Malviya’s second-place finish awarded India its inaugural quota from the tournament.

Malviya stayed in contention from the start, posting 50.5 in his opening series and reaching 100.0 by the end of the second series. Across the elimination stages he produced multiple high-10s, including 10.8 and 10.7, which helped him create separation from rivals. He maintained his form in the closing shots to keep Dubovy behind and secure the silver medal behind Hu.

In the morning session the Indian women’s 10m air pistol team took the silver medal, with Manu Bhaker, Suruchi Inder Singh and junior world champion Sainyam combining for a total of 1738 with 61 inner 10s. Manu led the trio with a qualification score of 583-21x that included a perfect 100 in her fourth series; Suruchi recorded 580-24x and Sainyam 575-16x. China won the women’s team gold with 1745-65x and Republic of Korea took bronze with 1729-49x.

India placed seventh in the men’s team event with a combined 1730-58x. Malviya top-scored for the team in qualification with 585-23x (97, 99, 97, 99, 97, 96), which put him third going into the individual final. Kamaljeet managed 580-20x to finish 27th in individual qualifying, while Ravin Kumar posted 565-15x. The men’s team medals went to China (1755-66x), Republic of Korea (1738-62x) and Uzbekistan (1738-44x).

Malviya’s silver therefore secured India’s first shooting quota place for Los Angeles 2028; the three quota spots from the men’s 10m air pistol were allocated to Hu Kai (first quota), Jaypal Malviya and Jindrich Dubovy (third available quota).
