Jean-Philippe Mateta was shown a straight red card for Crystal Palace after a late lunge on Tottenham Hotspur defender Micky van de Ven during their 2026-27 Premier League clash, referee Michael Oliver dismissing the striker following a VAR review.

Mateta’s dismissal came in one of his rare outings this season after an injury-plagued start; the forward had returned from a hamstring injury sustained during Palace’s first match against Everton and this was only his third Premier League appearance of the campaign. He is yet to score a league goal this season.

The tackle occurred as Mateta slid in attempting to regain the ball with power and, according to the match report, his studs struck van de Ven’s Achilles, leaving the Spurs centre-back rolling on the turf and drawing concern from the home crowd before he eventually avoided the worst-case scenario.

Referee Michael Oliver initially issued a yellow card for the late charge but, after the video assistant referee instructed him to review the incident at the pitchside monitor, Oliver upgraded the caution to a straight red and sent Mateta off.

Crystal Palace were the visitors and deployed a 3-4-2-1 formation without a designated striker; they were not forced into an early first-half substitution and subsequently chose to make no changes, leaving Dwight McNeil and Yeremy Pino as the most skilled players in red and blue on the pitch.

Since their 3-1 triumph over previous manager Oliver Glasner and Nottingham Forest at the beginning of the month, Sage’s team has not won; they have since been beaten 5-0 by Brighton and Hove Albion and lost 2-0 at home to Newcastle United.

The red card left Crystal Palace reduced to 10 men for the remainder of the match. For more updates, follow Khel Now on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram; download the Khel Now Android App or iOS App and join their community on Telegram.
