Joao Pedro poised to sign extended Chelsea contract

Chelsea striker Joao Pedro is poised to sign a new contract with the club running to 2032, with an option to extend for a further two years, according to reporting on 21 August 2026.
The Brazil international, 24, moved to Chelsea from Brighton last summer in a deal worth an initial £55m plus £5m in add-ons; earlier in his career he joined Watford in 2020 from boyhood club Fluminense. When his arrival was announced last year the contract length was reported as running until 2033, but that agreement actually ran to 2032 with a club option for one further year. Chelsea commonly cite maximum possible contract lengths that include these club options, so the forthcoming confirmation is expected to state he is under contract until 2034 even though the underlying terms run to 2032 with a two-year option. The club has extended his deal on improved financial terms rather than shortening it.
The renewal serves both to protect Chelsea’s investment and to reward the player’s recent form, with the club understood to have moved to guard against interest from Barcelona. The contract update is framed as part of a wider retention strategy rather than a reduction in his commitment at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea operate a strict wage structure but use movement between pay bands to incentivise performances; the club has previously progressed players through that system. Cole Palmer received a pay rise after a strong run of form, and Nicolas Jackson was moved from an entry-level salary into a more established wage bracket following his transfer from Villarreal.
Pedro’s on-field record underpins the new terms: last season he became the first Chelsea striker since Diego Costa to score 20 goals in a campaign without taking penalties, he scored three times during Chelsea’s Club World Cup-winning campaign last summer, and he has eight goals in seven pre-season matches.
Selection and squad implications are immediate. Pedro is likely to start Chelsea’s Premier League opener at Fulham on Monday, with new signings Danny Welbeck and Emmanuel Emegha expected to provide cover; his form has also led to him being handed the number nine shirt after Liam Delap relinquished it. Delap is available for transfer for about £50m and is attracting interest from Nottingham Forest and Leeds United.
Chelsea plan to finalise further contract extensions after the transfer window closes, with Levi Colwill and Estevao Willian among those the club is likely to consider for new deals.
