Joe Dean shoots bogey-free 63 to win British Masters at The Belfry

Joe Dean fired a bogey-free nine-under-par 63 to claim the British Masters title at The Belfry on Sunday. The 32-year-old Englishman secured his first DP World Tour victory in his 70th event and is listed as 292nd in the world.

Dean won the English Amateur in 2015 and turned professional the following year, and has previously worked as a supermarket delivery driver to help fund his golf. He won the inaugural Last Chance Qualifier on the Monday of Open Championship week in July to earn the final spot at Royal Birkdale, then married Emily, who carried his bag at Royal Birkdale and again this week. He collected the trophy and about £440,000 in prize money, which was more than he had earned in total from his previous 19 tournaments in the 2026 season. "All those painful hours and all the work, it's finally led to something," Dean said, adding: "It was a rare day when everything felt right and the putts were dropping and I couldn't do anything wrong."

Starting the final round seven shots behind leader Dan Hillier, Dean produced four birdies in his opening six holes and then added five more on the back nine, the last coming from a 10-foot putt to set a clubhouse target of 14 under. He then waited roughly 90 minutes as late challengers attempted to catch him but ultimately faded, allowing Dean to finish three strokes clear of the nearest quartet. "I can't thank her enough," said Dean on Sky Sports. "I hope I made her proud."

The tournament was affected by stormy weather in Warwickshire, with organisers losing more than nine hours of play on Thursday and Friday and having to work to complete the event before further forecast inclement weather returned. Play schedules were adjusted across the weekend as competitors completed earlier rounds and restarted final-round play.

Marco Penge, who had a breakthrough year in 2025 with three wins, had led at 10 under after a sparkling 65 in round two and began the final round on that total after finishing a third-round 72 on Sunday morning. Five birdies and two bogeys in his first nine holes on Sunday catapulted Penge into a one-shot lead with nine to play, but a third bogey on the 11th stalled his charge and five successive pars left him at 12 under with two holes remaining. Dan Hillier's challenge was harmed by a double-bogey six at the sixth, though he recovered to register two birdies on the back nine before closing with a one-over 73 to finish on 11 under. Denmark's Niklas Norgaard and Jacob Skov Olesen both signed for 71s and Spain's Nacho Elvira carded a 69 to join Hillier in second place at 11 under. Paraguay's Fabrizio Zanotti produced a late surge of four birdies in five holes to reach 12 under, but he made a triple-bogey on the last after taking two shots to get out of a fairway bunker and then finding water.

The British Masters was the first event in the race to qualify for the European team to take on the United States at next year's Ryder Cup in Ireland. It therefore served as the opening qualifying opportunity for players targeting selection for that team.
