Johan Manzambi’s rapid rise from Freiburg prospect to Villa’s record signing

In early September Johan Manzambi scored his first goal for Aston Villa against Tottenham to help secure Villa's first Premier League win of the season, and in just two years he has progressed from an unknown teenager to a recognised European young talent who could be named young talent of the year at the Ballon d'Or ceremony next month.

Manzambi made his senior debut for Freiburg in 2024 and a breakout season in Germany last term convinced Villa to pay more than £50m for a player who had only 47 club starts; the move became a club-record signing and he signed a five-year deal, becoming the most expensive Swiss player in history, surpassing Granit Xhaka's £38.25m transfer.

On the international stage Manzambi scored three goals in four games for Switzerland at the World Cup before a knee injury ended his tournament, having made his full international debut only a year earlier; he made his senior Switzerland debut against Mexico in June 2025 and, as Massimo Lombardo recalled, "I can remember his second game with Switzerland, against the USA and he scored. It was always important for him to come into the game and to do something."

At club level he was named the Europa League's Young Player of the Season as Freiburg lost the final to Villa in May, and he finished the campaign with 12 goals in 61 appearances; among players in the Bundesliga in his position last season Manzambi ranked first for 10-plus metre progressive carries (116), shot-ending carries (13) and fouls won (78).

Those performances accelerated his path from academy football to senior action: he learned German in three months, made his Freiburg first-team debut against Heidenheim a year after joining, and was described by Bernhard Weis — who gave him his Freiburg Under-19s debut — as someone who returned to the academy to "bring[s] some dirty clothes" because "He didn't have a washing machine so he comes here and washes some clothes." Weis added a description of Manzambi's interactions with younger players: "He would pick up some young guys from the under-13s, under-14s and take them to the train station. He would see the guys and say, 'come with me, I'll take you to the station', so they could get home. That's Johan Manzambi."

Weis said he had not anticipated such a rapid rise: "I didn't see that. I saw something for the first team, for us, but this way, no chance. The first half year at Freiburg it was not so easy for him, he's not so strong and he's not so stable. He put on five kilos and then he thought, 'now I go, it's the right moment, I will be faster and stronger'." Massimo Lombardo, who worked with Manzambi at Servette, credited his mentality and personality: "It is a real surprise for many people, that he can do something special so quickly," and added, "Mentally he was always a player who, when he came into the training session and games, always wanted to do something important."

Transfer interest and club strategy shaped the move to Villa: Freiburg believed Villa knew he would move this summer and described it as "a case of now or never for Emery," while Newcastle agreed a deal with Freiburg but "never got a yes from Manzambi." Weis backed the transfer as a sensible next step, saying: "I think Aston Villa is the right club for him. He will play every time when he is fit and that's the right way. Then I think he plays two seasons at Villa and then he goes to the next step," and, "After the World Cup I said he must go to the Premier League. Bayern Munich were mentioned, he didn't go to [Borussia] Dortmund, [Bayer] Leverkusen. It's the right way."

Freiburg have coped without him in the short term, going into the international break unbeaten and sitting third after topping the Bundesliga following three straight opening wins; without Manzambi they have won six of their seven games in all competitions, scoring 24 goals, and manager Julian Schuster had earlier said he had hoped to keep the player.

Manzambi now faces Scotland with Switzerland in the Nations League on Tuesday and will be available to continue his progression at both club and international level as the season reaches its next competitive fixtures.
