Josh Acheampong, a 20-year-old Chelsea defender and England Under-21 regular, has made 52 appearances since his Chelsea debut in 2024 and become a regular under manager Xabi Alonso this season, prompting questions about the club’s next move over his long-term future. He has started six of Chelsea’s past nine matches, accumulating 581 minutes of playing time.

Chelsea’s academy has produced a run of England centre-backs since John Terry’s breakthrough, including Levi Colwill, Trevoh Chalobah, Marc Guehi and Fikayo Tomori, alongside Andreas Christensen and Nathan Ake; Acheampong has emerged as the latest youth prospect to press for a senior role. The 20-year-old has started eight of England Under-21s’ past 10 matches and is increasingly viewed as a versatile option on the right side of defence.

Under Alonso, Acheampong’s minutes have risen: only Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers, Levi Colwill and Maxence Lacroix have logged more than his 581 minutes this season. Chelsea had conceded a league-high 12 goals before the international break but have let in only one since, and recorded their first clean sheet of the campaign away at Everton on Saturday; Alonso has pointed to collective defensive improvement aided by the return of Moises Caicedo and his partnership with Jordan Henderson.

Deployed as a roaming centre-back in a three, Acheampong has operated alongside more fixed options Colwill and Lacroix, moving into midfield or out wide to function as a traditional full-back in possession. He has built a promising understanding with right wing-back Pedro Neto, combining with him in the move that led to Joao Pedro’s goal against Bournemouth, and his form has kept £75m signing Wesley Fofana out of the side.

Acheampong is under contract until 2029 but has been the subject of transfer speculation, with sources within Chelsea repeatedly insisting he was "untouchable" despite reported interest elsewhere. Chelsea investigated targets with similar profiles — including Dean Huijsen in the summer of 2025 and Jeremy Jacquet in January 2026 — and at one stage this summer had 10 senior centre-backs on the books before finishing the window with six.

With no European football this season there were doubts over his playing time and potential loan moves were explored, including a proposed switch to Crystal Palace; Palace instead signed Axel Disasi on loan, with Premier League rules permitting only one domestic loan signing from another top-flight club. Acheampong has been at Chelsea since Under-8s and has twice come close to leaving: he did not sign a professional contract on his 17th birthday in 2023, prompting the club’s ownership to move in January 2024 to secure his future and avoid the risk of losing him for only a nominal compensation fee.

A year later he again looked likely to depart amid a dispute that former manager Enzo Maresca described as a "bad situation", and Chelsea briefly withdrew him from academy and first-team selection before he signed the contract that runs until 2029 in December 2024. That episode remains part of the backdrop to current talks around his progression and commitment.

There are no active discussions over a new deal at present, though the idea of a seven-year contract has been floated previously and Acheampong’s camp is cautious about rushing into negotiations until there is clearer evidence he can become a regular starter. Chelsea could face important decisions next summer when Acheampong, Colwill and Fofana all enter the final two years of their contracts.
